The case study is part of a research that analyzes the potentiality of historical maps as a tool to support the knowledge and protection of the landscape. The main interest of this article is to highlight data qualities and communicative capacities of 19th century cartography of Sardinia also in relation to the current state of the art. The drawing of landscape and territory at this time shows an interesting ability to combine scientific rigor and perceptive component that will have its maximum expression in 1845 with the work of the general Alberto Ferrero Della Marmora. Starting from a critical analysis of the archive documents, the methodology adopted in this case study needs the drawing/design of a geo-referenced database aimed at a comparison between historical maps and the series of aerial surveys made available by Cartography Service of the Sardinia Region. The subject of this analysis are some interesting drawings that describe the system of "Royal salt works" of Cagliari designed by Piedmontese government in the first half of the nineteenth century, surveyed and represented by military officers. The territorial data recorded in the examined maps shows an interesting compatibility with the most recent acquisitions and allows a diachronic analysis of the transformations. To this end – putting together the high precision of current survey and representation methods with information and immediacy of historical cartographic production - the drawings are analyzed, elaborated and "communicated" through graphics models able to express by signs the complexity of a stratified landscape.

The coastal landscape of Sardinia is characterized by the presence of the watchtowers in use until 1842. These architectures embellish the coastline, providing an interesting repertoire that exists in perfect harmony with the landscape thanks to forms, construction techniques, and materials that bring to mind the nuragic towers, the undisputed symbol of Sardinia. The same landscape often exhibits, in close proximity to these architectures, the defense structures built during World War II; monolithic bunkers which, in contrast to the imposing watchtowers, lie hidden in the landscape that hosts them and of which they have become part. Abandoned to the fury of the elements along the sandy coasts, they recall a recent past/present, and serve as a memoire for that which should not happen again. This paper presents a preliminary survey that aims to increase the knowledge and highlight the historical-cultural and landscape value of these objects; today mostly useless, but highly useful to keep the memory of that war alive.

In Europa, intorno alla metà del Quattrocento, l'avvento delle bocche da fuoco da avvio ad un processo di adeguamento e ammodernamento delle difese di matrice medievale alle mutate strategie di guerra. Nell'ultimo trentennio del XV secolo le tecniche ossidionali progrediscono molto velocemente senza peraltro raggiungere un livello di affidabilità tale da consentire un completo abbandono dei sistemi tradizionali e il periodo compreso tra la fine del Quattrocento e gli inizi del Cinquecento si contraddistingue per una ricerca di soluzioni che garantissero un adeguamento delle difese, laddove non era possibile un completo rifacimento delle fortificazioni esistenti. Le architetture che caratterizzano questo momento storico sono state definite di transizione ma di fatto rappresentano precise risposte a precise condizioni di guerra queste sì transitorie. Il paesaggio storico urbano di Cagliari conserva alcune testimonianze di questo passaggio formale delle cosiddette fortificazioni alla moderna e tra queste il baluardo "Dusay", un'opera realizzata tra fine del Quattrocento e gli inizi del Cinquecento nell'area di San Pancrazio per la difesa del fronte nord del Castello. Il modello impiegato, aspramente criticato ad inizio Cinquecento dagli esperti nell'arte di fabbricar fortezze e voluto da un viceré ancora privo dell'assistenza tecnica di uno specialista, troverà ben presto un riutilizzo al servizio dell'opera a tenaglia realizzata a partire dal 1558 e le cui vicende costruttive sono descritte nei documenti d'archivio e nei precisi disegni redatti dagli ingegneri militari attivi all'epoca in Sardegna. Qui risiede la specificità del baluardo Dusay; la sua presenza e conservazione, la sua analisi stilistica e costruttiva permettono l'osservazione delle trasformazioni intercorse e l'esame delle soluzioni progettuali impiegate nel Mediterraneo spagnolo tra la fine del Quattrocento e la seconda metà del Cinquecento.

[EN] The present contribution proposes, through some representative digital models and graphical schemes, some technical aspect that characterizes the work of Jacopo and Giorgio Paleari Fratino, military engineers in the service of Philip II of Spain in the second half of the sixteenth-century. Matrices and geometric models directly extracted from the military treatises, in particular from the text Della fortificatione della città wrote by G. Maggi and J.F. Castriotto and published in Venice in 1564, are skillfully adapted to the topography of the places and lead plastic solutions that optimize resources and respect of architectural design of modern fortifications. On 1st August, 1707, the Patrimonial Council of the Kingdom of Sardinia approved the contents of the report drawn up by Don Manuel Bellejo, Prince of Tapia, regarding the interventions to be carried out in the defensive works ion land to the south of Cagliari. The so-called War of Succession to the Throne of Spain, fought by land, sea and on several continents, put a strain on the military sector of the various states. The port cities assumed strategic importance, as evidenced by the investments made in strengthening the strongholds of the Kingdom. The danger of invasion of Sardinia was evident in the report of Don Manuel, who identified a weak point of Cagliari in the territory between the promontory of Sant'Elia and the Villanova district. With an ideal bird's eye-view , Bellejo accompanies the reader through the anti-invasion garrisons, ringing places, natural features, and paths, illustrating the defensive works inspected or necessary. The wealth of details allows to relocate the ancient garrisons on historical and current cartography and to reconstruct the conformation of the territory. For this purpose, the maps and military projects produced between the 16th and 18th centuries are fundamental aids. The comparison between ancient maps and today's aerial photogrammetry provides solid tools for the study of the document, which opens an interesting window on the Cagliari of the time: a short, but intense historical phase that narrowly precedes the great transformations of the Savoy era. ; Il 1 agosto 1707, il Consiglio Patrimoniale del Regno di Sardegna approva i contenuti della relazione redatta da don Manuel Bellejo, principe di Tapia, riguardante gli interventi da realizzarsi nelle opere difensive a meridione di Cagliari. La forma urbana e le dinamiche di sviluppo storico della città di Cagliari sono ben descritte nelle mappe elaborate, per scopi in prevalenza militari, a partire dall'Età Moderna. Numerosi rilievi e progetti accompagnano gli ampliamenti della cinta fortificata e la difesa del territorio circostante la città. Se le prime rappresentazioni estese al nucleo insediativo, opera degli ingegneri militari al servizio dell'Impero di Spagna, focalizzano l'attenzione sulla sequenza di bastioni sovrapposta alla linea esistente, le mappe settecentesche sono ricche di informazioni, non solo di interesse militare. La maggiore qualità di queste produzioni è frutto della tecnica cartografica affinatasi nella prima metà del secolo XVIII, grazie al perfezionamento degli strumenti di rilievo e rappresentazione architettonico-territoriale e alla codifica dei modelli grafici. In questo contesto, la "Pianta della città di Cagliari e suoi borghi", custodita presso l'Archivio di Stato di Torino, è un documento di notevole interesse per lo studio delle trasformazioni e la tutela degli assetti storici del capoluogo isolano. Nel documento, infatti, oltre alle fortificazioni, ben descritte in tutti i dettagli, compaiono gli edifici ecclesiastici, il tessuto urbano, la morfologia dei luoghi nonché l'uso del suolo. Priva di data e firma, la mappa offre una lettura dettagliata della piazzaforte di Cagliari alla metà del Settecento; la collocazione tra le Carte Topografiche Segrete denota la funzione militare del documento e la tipologia di informazioni contenute. Si distingue infatti la restituzione approssimata, ma completa, del tessuto edilizio e la rispondenza precisa dei tracciati murari con le imponenti strutture difensive ancora esistenti. Il carattere descrittivo della tavola consente di ricostruire, dal punto di vista grafico e cronologico, gli assetti urbani modificatisi nel tempo o perduti a seguito delle trasformazioni tardo-ottocentesche. L'uso consapevole del documento agevolerebbe, inoltre, la tutela delle tracce superstiti e non, inglobate nel tessuto urbano. Tale ricostruzione si avvale oggi degli strumenti digitali, grazie alla compatibilità della mappa con le ricognizioni aerofotogrammetriche attuali. Lo studio comparato delle fortificazioni e il confronto con le fabbriche religiose raffigurate nella mappa aprono uno stimolante confronto tra le discipline del Disegno e della Storia dell'Architettura. Con questi presupposti, il saggio propone una chiave interpretativa nuova per la "Pianta', sotto l'aspetto del rilievo e della rappresentazione, approfondendo temi di interesse storico-culturale e paesaggistico.

Nei primi anni della Seconda Guerra Mondiale sulla costa della Sardegna venne realizzato un sistema di difesa costituito essenzialmente da bunker e batterie in calcestruzzo armato, molti dei quali ancora conservatisi come "obstinadas ruinas" che resistono al passare del tempo. I nodi di questa rete, simultanea alla costruzione di altri "muri" in tutta Europa, sono distribuiti sul territorio in base a criteri tattici di vigilanza, controllo e capacità di risposta ad un attacco nemico, secondo un modello del tutto affine al sistema di torri "sentinella" dell'età moderna. Le strutture superstiti di tale rete, numerose e ripetute come se fossero oggetti industriali, sono in genere portatori di valori negativi per la loro originaria natura: erano macchine per uccidere, per autodifesa, e per tale connotazione risulta difficile integrare questo patrimonio architettonico nel concetto di identità condivisa. Quello della Sardegna – con più di mille manufatti sparsi in tutto il territorio – rappresenta un caso significativo. In questa occasione si prende in considerazione una parte della costa occidentale dell'Isola, in particolare nell'area di Bosa, delimitata da due torri storiche, attraverso la realizzazione di un inventario – supportato dal rilievo fotogrammetrico – e la classificazione per tipi delle strutture conservate, con l'obiettivo di avanzare proposte finalizzate alla tutela e alla conservazione di questo patrimonio, che rappresenta una delle eredità delle guerre del XX secolo. The ancient walls of Santa Croce in the town of Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy), date back to the Middle Age and have had, until the nineteenth century, several interventions with superpositions and modifications. Beyond the historical and archaeological interest, the study of the structure of the ancient walls became necessary in view of building an underground car parking just at the base of the walls itself. With this purpose, in addition to classical archaeological surveys a geophysical non-destructive survey with seismic techniques has been carried out, namely two refraction tomographies aimed at characterizing the rocks at the base of the walls, and four up-hole tomographies across the walls itself. These geophysical surveys provide a good geotechnical information on the foundation condition, the problematic feasibility of the underground parking and, along with the archaeological procedures, on the heterogeneous structure of the walls.

Lo sviluppo di una indagine multidisciplinare finalizzata alla conoscenza dei complessi monumentali storici in ambito urbano assume un ruolo di primaria importanza per la tutela del patrimonio architettonico e paesaggistico. Con tale obiettivo l'integrazione tra metodologie di rilevamento e metodi geofisici si è dimostrata un utile supporto alla ricostruzione delle vicende costruttive del bastione di Santa Croce a Cagliari, sito pluristratificato interessato a partire dal Cinquecento da numerose sovrapposizioni e ricostruzioni. L'impiego combinato di tecniche diagnostiche non distruttive di tipo geofisico particolarmente utili nei casi in cui non sia possibile l'effettuazione di indagine invasive di notevole impatto come scavi e sondaggi, ha difatti permesso di approfondire la conoscenza del sistema costruttivo e funzionale dell'opera militare. Gli esiti dell'indagine hanno consentito di definire le caratteristiche stilistico costruttive dell'opera cinquecentesca, rivelare l'utilizzo di soluzioni differenti da quanto sinora riscontrato nelle piazzeforti spagnole dell'epoca, circoscrivere l'area interessata dalla ricostruzione documentata nelle fonti storiche, utili tasselli conoscitivi anche in vista di nuovi interventi progettuali che prevedono, tra l'altro, la realizzazione di un parcheggio interrato alla base dello stesso bastione. ; Developing a protocol for the multidisciplinary investigation of historical monumental complexes in urban environments covers a paramount role in protecting the architectural and landscape heritage. To this purpose, integrating the investigation methodologies typical of architecture with the geophysical ones has proved useful in assessing the conditions of the places and of the works, so as to identify and represent their modifications. Comparing data from different disciplinary contributions (historical, archaeological and geophysical ones) has specifically allowed the organisation and assessment of an investigating protocol aiming to the representation, protection and valorisation of the bastion layout; in particular, it has contributed to define its stylistic architectural features, and improve knowledge of the military work operation and of its current layout, even in view of any further planning intervention in an area where, furthermore, the realisation of a parking lot buried at the basis of the 16th century bastion is being considered.

These "modern sentinels", positioned along the coastline, the main roads and the railway leading to the actual urban context, are designed in reinforced concrete, also integrated with local stone, with a frequently use of square and circle shape often combined or modified and adapted to achieve a complete mimesis in the landscape that hosts them. The survey, applied at architecture and landscape scale, has produced a complete collection of data functional to realize an interoperable digital database, a necessary tool for a deepened knowledge and enhancement of a lost WWII heritage.

Un'analisi delle rappresentazioni di un territorio nel medio e lungo periodo permette di riconoscerne le forme ed i caratteri identitari, comprenderne le dinamiche di trasformazione e conservare la memoria di paesaggi e architetture oggi definitivamente perdute. Lo studio delle produzioni cartografiche può condurre ad interessanti risultati e offrire un contributo metodologico alla ricerca se supportato da una padronanza dei sistemi e degli strumenti per il rilevamento e il disegno dell'architettura e del territorio. Impiego della bussola e di misurazioni astronomiche in appoggio ad una rete di capisaldi strumentali guidano la ricognizione territoriale ed il rilievo delle architetture a partire dal Duecento. Tali procedure, ampiamente collaudate nel corso del Cinquecento, nel Settecento possono far affidamento su attrezzature più precise e sono interessate da un processo di standardizzazione dei metodi di acquisi- zione e trascrizione grafica. An analysis of the representations of a territory in the medium and long term makes it possible to recognize its forms and its identity characters, understand the dynamics of transformation and preserve the memory of landscapes and architecture now definitively lost. The study of the maps can lead to interesting results and offer a methodological contribution to the research if supported by a mastery of systems and tools for survey and drawing of the architecture and the territory. The use of the compass and astronomical measurements in support of a network of instrumental stations starting from the thirteenth century guide the territorial reconnais- sance and the survey of the architectures. These procedures, widely tested during the sixteenth century, in the eighteenth century can rely on more precise equipment and are subject of a process of standardization of the methods of acquisition and graphic representation. The eighteenth century's drawings made by military engineers for the description of the stretch of Spanish coast between Santa Pola and Alicante and for the project for a new fortified settlement in the 'Isla Plana' offer the opportunity to apply a research path focused on the analysis of the maps scientifically repeatable in other contexts.

In the first years of the Second World War along the coast of Sardinia, a system of military defenses was built consisting essentially of bunkers and concrete batteries, many of which are still standing, as "testarde rovine" that resist the passage of time. This network has been structured on the territory according to tactical criteria of vigilance, control and ability to respond against an attack and based on a project that has a link with the system of towers-sentinels of the Modern age and is simultaneous to the construction of other "walls" throughout Europe. His remains, numerous and repeated as industrial objects, are bearers of negative values and discord from his own conception: machines to kill, for self-defense, so it is difficult to relate this architectural heritage with the concept of shared identity. Sardinia is representative of this legacy because more than a thousand scattered elements have been built throughout the island; the proposed analysis deepens the theme in the study area of Bosa, on the west coast, bounded by two historical towers, proceeding with the inventory and classification of the pieces that remain (with the contribute of photogrammetric survey and 3d models) in order to propose options for the protection and conservation of this legacy of the twentieth century armed conflicts. The proposals for reuse distinguish the cultural and geographical context –both urban and rural– in which the ruins are inserted and try to integrate this singular heritage into the coastal historical landscape as a further layer of the actions of the men along the time.
